When can I shower and wash my hair after a hair transplant?

Published on March 27, 2020

Most patients are surprised to know how quickly they can get back to many activities with a hair transplant, especially with FUE (follicular unit extraction) techniques. One important activity is showering and washing your hair.

Patients can immediately bathe after a hair transplant procedure but should keep their scalp dry. After 48 hours they can gently wash the transplanted areas but should not allow shower water to directly hit the new grafts. After one week, patients may shower and wash their hair normally.

Brushing, combing and using styling products can be done after just a week with FUE techniques. With more traditional FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation, ie strip technique) patients need to be careful with combs and brushes until the stitches are removed- anywhere from 10-14 days after the procedure.

With either technique, patients find themselves able to get back to most social and work activities by one week.
